Biggest Interest in their Lives

There is an old adage in soft skills:

“Show interest in their interests.”

The typical image is a salesman talking about the prospect’s fish trophy. Trying to get “rapport.”

But what does it come down to, really?

What is the essence of being LIKED?

After decades of study, I can summarize it in one sentence:

Humans like those who help them survive.

Having Similarities & Commonalities? Those are tools for building a tribe = stronger together = survival.

Providing Useful Knowledge? Avoiding dangers and getting more resources = survival.

Being Kind & Friendly? …

“Social conditioning robbed this out of us.”

Wisdom, in in the unexpected

Airport lounge. 20 minutes to boarding. Sleepy masked faces all around.

Suddenly, I hear a thud.

A kid hit the ground like Newton’s apple, falling from the tree.

Time stopped. He didn’t cry. He looked at the face of his mother, searching for her reaction.

She smiled. He smiled. And back to playing he went. As if nothing happened.

And I noticed:

He was fully “here.”
Climbing seats, NOT to reach an outcome, but because that was his momentary desire.
A foot in the wrong place? …

uhhhh…

The way people waste their lives.

The way people squander their potential.
The way people let habit and fear limit them and keep them small.
I believe humanity was born for greatness.
That every single human life could be so much more than it is.
And I blame many things for this:
I blame the educational system which just wastes more than 10 years of youth on memorizing information that we'll never use in our lives.
I blame parents who teach their children to be cautious, to follow the traditional path, and to never take risks or follow their hearts.
I blame the news which fills our…

We all dream of being liked…

We dream of a world where everyone loves us, sing our praise, and name their first-born child after us…

Your name. Here. And in millions of other children…

A world where 8 billion people invite us to their birthday parties, say we are their “Best Friend Forever,” and shower us with love…

But that’s not reality…

And when you don’t live according to the reality of reality, all your’e doing is setting yourself up for deep disappointment…

Unfocused. Unproductive. Stressed out…

A general sense of unease, finally understood and solved…

But let’s start at the beginning:

For the longest time, I’ve believed that the more you think about your ultimate goals, the more likely you are to get them…

The more you think about them, the more action you’ll take, and therefore: PROGRESS…

But the more I paid attention to myself, the more I discovered one single critical truth:

Keep this in mind. Every day. At every step. Forever…

I prided myself in imagining my goals every morning, and every night, never skipping a day…

But the more I did it, the less…

My little brother was born when I was 13 years old.

It’s after my mother remarried…

And since that day, I’ve been like a father to him, a mentor, and a role model…

I’d give my brother anything. I want him to have the best of life. To exceed all expectations. To surpass any limits…

And a few years ago, we were together on a trip to one of my most loved cities in the world:

Barcelona…

I was there, with my brother, walking the main touristic street of La Rambla, when suddenly I had an idea…

I wanted to…

Me. Unusually. Today…

Cold sweat dripping down my forehead…

My heart beating in my temples…

My eyes went foggy when I heard her innocent words…

“But am I so weak that such a little challenge can send me down a panic spin?”

“Are all those years of working on myself, on my own internal strength… just a lie, an illusion?”

It started this morning, this very same day…

It was supposed to be a boring drive down to the Municipality, where I’d make a simple application to get some personal documents issued…

Of course, I don’t like such errands. They’re a waste of…

Change sneaks up on us… it’s so slow, we barely noticed it happening…

And for the longest time, we think we’re the same limited person as before, not knowing how much we have grown as a person…

Today, was one of those “unlucky” yet so lucky days:

As soon as I woke up, I’ve been called upon to fix problems, to fight fires, to resist against the forces of entropy in this world trying to spread chaos everywhere…

What a day…

Problem after problem. Catastrophes following each other, and I almost…

I was in the shower, warm water running over my head…

A thought stopped me in my track. Stress raced through my veins. I had a very important decision to make:

“What type of person do I REALLY want to be?”

Why do so many deep thoughts arrive when we’re in the shower?

But the story didn’t start then, not at all…

The story started one year earlier:

I was 18, and I had a lifelong dream…

I was raised hearing of the mystique of Brazil, the charm of Rio de Janeiro, the happiness of its people, the beauty of its beaches…

And since as far as I…

Will you surfe on the big wave of change, or get crushed by it?

Things happen.

That is an essential part of life, that things will change and whatever is happening at this exact moment will not stay the same, no matter how long and hard we hold onto it.

Still, we feel an urge, and impulse to control our world, and to try to fix things in place, and keep things “in order”, so nothing happens that we haven’t expected.

That’s understandable.

Without order and control, we may freak out at how little control we have in life, and how small our impact is against fate, the world, and the whole universe.

The…
